MASSAGE
Massage therapy is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. It is also an alternative health option to help alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning, if employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury.

Massage therapists work to improve the circulation of blood through the body and to speed the removal of metabolic waste products from muscles. Their skilled kneading increases the flexibility of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues. Some people visit a massage therapist to relieve pain or to warm up before a sporting event. Others want to relax and reduce stress.

Getting a good massage is like taking a mini vacation! There are many types of massage to consider. The Swedish technique can be as relaxing as lounging by the pool, while a deep tissue massage is more rigorous and may test your physical limits, If you are an expecting mother, the prenatal massage can be beneficial, but don’t forget to consult your physician first! Whichever you choose, you are assured a refreshing and well-deserved break from your daily routine.

Swedish Massage
By far the most predominant example of traditional European massage and it is the most commonly used method in the United States. Swedish uses a system of long gliding strokes (called effleurage), kneading and friction techniques that actively manipulate the muscles and joints while simultaneously stimulating the central nervous system.

Trigger Point
This is a form of deep massage that applies concentrated finger pressure specifically to individual muscles. This is a very detailed approach, used to increase blood flow and to release trigger points, intense knots of muscle tension that refer pain to other parts of the body (they become trigger points when they seem to trigger a pain pattern). This form of massage helps to break the cycle of spasm and pain and is often used in pain control.

Deep Tissue Massage
This approach is used to release chronic patterns of muscular tension using slow strokes, direct pressure, or friction. Often the movements are directed across the grain of the muscles (cross-fiber) using the fingers, thumbs, or elbows. This is applied with greater pressure and at deeper layers of the muscle than Swedish massage and that is why it is called deep tissue. Deep tissue massage lends itself to being more focused on a problem area.

Rolfing
Aligns the major body segments through deep manipulation of the fascia or connective tissue.

Sports Massage
This uses techniques similar to Swedish and deep tissue but more specifically adapted to deal with the needs of athletes and the effects of athletic performance on the body. Sports massage is used before or after events, as part of an athlete’s training regimen, and to promote healing from injuries.

CranioSacral Therapy
This is soft tissue -oriented, fluid-oriented, membrane-oriented, and energy-oriented. Palpation (touch by the practitioner) is used both to observe and treat dysfunctions in the craniosacral system, which includes the head, spinal column, and sacrum in one continuous sheath. Corrective pressure of only about five grams is applied to various areas to promote the re-establishment of a normal, symmetrical pattern of pulsation throughout the system.

Acupressure
Applies pressure to a pattern of specific points that correspond with the acupuncture points. Pressure is applied with the thumb, finger, and palm rather than needles. The goal is the efficient and balanced flow of chi through the meridians. It is believed that where there is tension being held in the musculature, the low of chi is impaired through those areas, which can lead to chronic problems not only in the musculature but in the associated organs.

Reflexology
This approach involves the manual stimulation of reflex points on the ears, hands, and feet. Compression by specific touch techniques affects a system of points and areas that are thought to “reflex” through neurological pathways to distant parts of the body. The pressure on these reflex points (also called “cuteneo-organ reflex points”) is used to relieve stress and tension, to improve blood supply, to promote the unblocking of nerve impulses, and to help restore homeostasis or balance in the body.

Infant Massage
Incorporates nurturing touch, massage and reflexology in a loving, fun, one-on-one interaction that is nourishment for baby’s healthy development of mind, body, and spirit.

Prenatal Massage
Focuses on the special needs of a mother-to-be. It reduces swelling, back and neck pain, stimulates the circulatory system, and provides much-needed emotional support. For your convenience, our treatment table has supporting pillows. Please consult your physician prior to receiving this massage.
